Troubleshooting – Desktop, Explorer, Taskbar


  • 1. Fix missing “quick launch” after reboot.

    If you create a quick launch bar, but it disappears after restart, try any of the following solutions:

    1)

    Try to create a quick launch with a value other than your:

    %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
    %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
    C:\Users\User_name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

    2)

    Set the slider control (UAC) in penultimate value.

    3)

    Create and add to the registry the following .reg file:

    in the Run dialog box from the Start menu (Win + R), type control userpasswords2 and press Enter.
    Check the box “Users must enter a user name and password”

    6)

    in the Run dialog box from the Start menu (Win + R), type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
    Open User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar
    Change the setting Show Quicklaunch on Taskbar to Enable.

    7)

    Close the Language bar and install instead Punto Switcher, Keyboard Ninja, Orfo Switcher or Key Switcher

  • 2. Fix failures encountered during the installation, update, or delete the program using Windows Installer.

    Option 1

    1) go to Start->All programs->Accessories
    2) right-click command prompt and select Run as administrator
    3) copy the line bellow in a command window and press Enter:
    reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f
    Option 2

    1) click Start, type regedit in the Search bar and press Enter.
    2) go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows
    3) right-click on key DisabledSessions and click Delete.

  • 3. Restoration of the item “Run” on the Start menu.

    If you marked item “Run” in Start menu properties (Start button, right-click and select Properties, click Customize), and the menu “Run” does not show you can restore it like this:
    1) in the Start menu Search box, type gpedit.msc, and then open the file gpedit.msc (Local Group Policy Editor)
    2) on the left pane of the opened window go to the tab: \User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar
    3) click on the right pane of the line Add the run command in Start menu
    4) double-click, select “Enable” and click Apply and OK.
  • 4. Explorer bug fix “could not find this item”.

    If you are experiencing this error, then you probably have lost their descriptions of folders. To restore them:
    1) download the file FolderDescriptions.zip
    2) extract it to any folder.
    3) in accordance with the version of your Windows apply the reg-file, restore the settings of the folders in the original description.
    4) restart your computer.
  • 5. Restoring the association for the *.cpl files.

    If any program is hit by an association Windows with *. cpl files:
    1) right-click on any file *.cpl, and select Properties
    2) on the General tab press button Change…
    3) in the open window click Browse
    4) go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder and select the file control.exe
    5) Click OK
  • 6. Correction disable Windows Explorer when you right-click on a file or folder.

    Download ShellExView: small utility from the official site or from a mirror.
    Option 1.

    The best solution may be disabling shell extensions CmdLineExt.dll
    1) launch ShellExView.
    2) locate to the withdrawn its shell extensions – extension named CmdLineContextMenu Class
    3) highlight and press F7 or via the context menu select the option Disable Selected Items.
    4) reboot the computer.

    or

    1) Start-> run (Win + R)
    2) type regsvr32 /u CmdLineExt.dll and then OK.
    3) restart your computer.

    Option 2.

    1) launch ShellExView.
    2) do the sorting by column Type (click the title column). You will be interested in recording where Type = Context Menu and the File Extensions has an asterisk.
    3) turn off the record at a time, starting with the extensions, not owned by Microsoft. Disabling is done by right-clicking-> Disable Selected Items or the key F7.
    4) off the record, test Explorer

    If you have disabled all extensions, but the problem persists, then at the command prompt (Win + R-> cmd-> OK) then type sfc /scannow, and then press Enter.
    If this action does not have success, then reboot Windows in safe mode.
    When in safe mode, this problem disappears, then everything is OK, then the problem is caused by one of your programs, drivers, codecs, or services and you have to manually search for the cause of the failed. Remove one curriculum, disable a service or roll back to previous versions of installed drivers, or by using restore points to return to the previous state-based system and observe the error has disappeared.

  • 7. Restore the Language bar.

    The disappearance of the language bar most often occurs after the use of cleaner or optimizer system.
    Before using one of the options, do the following:

    1) open the Registry Editor (Win + R-> regedit-> OK)
    2) check whether the prohibition added to run language bar in the following registry folder:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load
    3) verify that the registry branch:

    – value of the parameter REG_SZ – AppName must be ctfmon.exe
    - value of the parameter REG_SZ – AppPath must be: C\Windows\system32

    Option 1

    1) go to Control Panel->Regional and language->Keyboards and Language tab
    2) press Change keyboards, select Language bar tab. Check Docked in the taskbar and Show text labels on the Language bar. Press Apply and OK
    3) click the right button on the taskbar, select Properties.
    4) in the Notification area, click the Customize button
    5) in the window that opens, check the “Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar”, and click OK

    Option 2

    In the context menu, taskbar, uncheck “Lock the Taskbar”, expand the boundaries for all panels, and then check the box “Lock the Taskbar”.

    Option 3

    Find the file ctfmon.exe and add it to autostart or create a reg-file with the following contents:

    Option 4

    1) open Text Services and Input Languages

    1.1.3) press OK
    2) on the General tab, delete all except the English keyboard layout
    3) on the Language bar tab to clear all check boxes and select Hidden
    4) manually unload the library.
    4.1) open Start-> run (or press Win + R)
    4.2) Then alternately commands:
    Regsvr32.exe /u Msctf.dll
    Regsvr32.exe /u Msctf.dll.mui

    5) reboot the computer.
    6) open Text services and input languages
    7) on the General tab, add the desired keyboard layout
    8) on the Language bar, select Docked in the taskbar and select the check box next to the item Show text labels on the language bar.
    9) click OK.

  • 8. correction of errors when folders “recent places” and “recent items” empty.

    1) right click on the Start button and select on Properties
    2) check the box next to the items:
    “Store and display a list of recently opened programs in your Start menu”
    “Store and display a list of recently opened items in the start menu and taskbar”
    3) click OK.
  • 9. Removal appears on the desktop folder “Recent Places”.

    1) delete the folder C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent
    2) restart the computer or restart the system
    3) go to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\
    4) when Windows 7 does not restore Recent folder again, create it yourself.
  • 10. solving the errors “There is no script engine for file extension “.js”.

    Sometimes an application can change the file association “.js” (for example, a text editor that uses scripts).

    Reinstalling Java from Sun Microsystems or components from the Microsoft site, not always fixes this error.

    Must be restored through the registry value by default “JSFile.”

  • 11. Gadgets, or configure them refuse to run.

    For the normal functioning of the gadgets we recommend that you do not disable fully UAC, and set a minimum level.
    If you need a working gadgets if you disable user account control (UAC):

    If you lost the item “Pin to taskbar”:

    3) if you choose the type of files: text files, the file name in quotation marks to be sure. (For example: “demo.reg”)

  • 13. User folders are displayed the usual icons.

    If you have custom folders such as documents, images, etc., are displayed in Windows Explorer with usual icons, like any other folder, then this may be due to a lack or damage the desktop.ini files located in folders. Or are these files have incorrect attributes.

  • 14. Correction of problems with duplicate shortcuts on the desktop.

  • 15. Restore search in Explorer and start menu.

    1) using the Registry Editor(Win + R-> regedit)
    1.1) open the registry branch:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
    1.2) in case the parameter NoFind, remove it.

    2) using the Control Panel
    2.1) go to Control Panel/Programs and features
    2.2) select “Turn Windows features on or off” (or Win + R-> OptionalFeatures.exe)
    2.3) verify that you have Windows Search

    3) using the Local Group Policy Editor.
    3.1) in the Run dialog box from the Start menu (Win + R), type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
    3.2) open User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start menu and taskbar
    3.3) modify these policy settings to Not Configured:
    - Add Search Internet link to Start Menu
    - Remove Search link from Start Menu

  • 16. Correction tooltips, pop-up behind the taskbar.

    If you have an error occurs when a ToolTip is provided for the Windows taskbar, and it can be seen partially or completely not visible, you can use a small program ToolTipFixer which fixes this bug by returning to the place of a ToolTip.

    2) click Search->Find…
    3) in the window that opens, click on Search in key:

    5) in the text box Find what: type the name of the missing element in the system (folder or file)
    6) click the Find
    7) scroll to a found using the left mouse button or press the key combination Ctrl + A to select all.
    8) click on the highlight right-click and select Delete From Registry

  • 19. When booting Windows will automatically open Windows Explorer.

    Solutions:

    1) open Start->Control Panel->Folder options->View->uncheck “Restore previous folder Windows at logon”.

  • 20. Restoring startup Exe-files in the system.

    4) click on this file and choose Run as administrator.
